Two Long-Time Mayors Step Down: Urgent Change in Island Politics
UPDATE: In a surprising turn of events, two long-serving mayors from Vancouver Island, Maja Tait of Sooke and Barb Desjardins of Esquimalt, have announced they will not seek re-election in the upcoming municipal elections. With a combined total of 39 years in leadership, their departure marks a significant shift in local governance.
Desjardins, who has served as mayor since 2008, expressed the bittersweet nature of her decision, stating, “There’s always more to do.” Reflecting on her tenure, she noted the incredible transformation Esquimalt has undergone during her time in office. “It was about keeping people healthy in so many ways,” she emphasized, highlighting her commitment to community health.
Meanwhile, Tait has served both as a councillor and mayor since 2008 and took to email to convey her gratitude: “Serving on council has been a privilege.” After 17 years, she looks forward to passing on the gavel to new leadership. “It is time to seek out a new opportunity/adventure!” Tait stated.
Both mayors have indicated their futures remain uncertain but expressed a dedication to community involvement beyond their political careers. Desjardins, now a grandmother, mentioned her ongoing passion for community service, while Tait is ready to embrace new adventures outside municipal politics.
As the elections approach, the political landscape of Vancouver Island is poised for change. Local residents and stakeholders will be watching closely for candidates stepping forward to fill the significant shoes left by these two influential leaders.
Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops and potential successors emerge. The departure of Tait and Desjardins not only reshapes the immediate political scene but also opens the door for new voices and visions in local governance.
