Two Men Fined $7K for Illegal Moose Hunting in Ontario
BREAKING: Two men from southern Ontario have been fined a total of $7,000 for violating moose hunting regulations following an investigation that unfolded north of Marathon on October 13, 2024. This urgent update highlights the serious consequences of illegal hunting practices in the region.
Scott Nadalin of Windsor has pleaded guilty to hunting moose without a valid license, resulting in a hefty $5,000 fine. Meanwhile, Anthony Diesbourg from Belle River was fined $2,000 for unlawfully invalidating his tag on a moose killed by Nadalin. The case underscores the importance of adhering to hunting regulations that protect wildlife and ensure ethical hunting practices.
On October 16, 2024, conservation officers were patrolling the area surrounding Killala Lake Road when they encountered a group of hunters. During the inspection, it was revealed that on the prior date, Nadalin shot a bull moose while being over 11.3 kilometers away from Diesbourg, the tag holder. This significant distance violated party hunting regulations, which require hunters to remain within five kilometers of the tag holder.
The Ministry of Natural Resources reported that after being contacted, Diesbourg arrived at the kill site and invalidated his tag for the moose shot by Nadalin. Following these events, conservation officers seized the moose and donated it to a local Indigenous community, highlighting a commitment to community support amid enforcement actions.
Justice of the Peace Jennifer L. Robinson presided over the case in a Thunder Bay courtroom on August 12, confirming the penalties under the authority of the Ontario Court of Justice. This ruling serves as a reminder of the legal and ethical obligations faced by hunters in Ontario.
As the hunting season progresses, officials urge the public to respect hunting laws to avoid harsh penalties. Individuals witnessing illegal hunting practices are encouraged to report them through the Ministry TIPS line at 1-877-847-7667 or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.
