UBC, Pathways, City Finalize Urgent Housing Complex Agreement
BREAKING: A crucial agreement has been reached between UBC, Pathways Abilities Society, and the City of Kelowna for a new housing complex near Capri Mall. This development follows months of intensive collaboration and is set to significantly improve housing options for individuals supported by Pathways.
Just announced, UBC Properties Trust will acquire land to build a new purpose-built facility, replacing the former Hadgraft Wilson Place (HWP) site. Dr. Lesley Cormack, Principal and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at UBC Okanagan, expressed her satisfaction, stating, “I’m immensely grateful for everyone’s patience and understanding… we can now focus on a clear and positive outcome.”
The new property, dubbed the Pridham Site, will include 69 units designed to meet the needs of Pathways’ tenants, providing essential services and housing. The agreement marks a significant milestone, coming 18 months after the HWP was evacuated.
Alan Clay, Executive Director of Pathways Abilities Society, highlighted the importance of this agreement, saying, “We’ve taken a huge step to make that goal a reality.” This project aims to create a supportive environment for individuals with diverse abilities.
Under the deal, UBC Properties Trust will exchange the former HWP site at 1360 Bertram Street with the City of Kelowna, facilitating the development of the new facility. Kelowna Mayor Tom Dyas commended the collaborative effort, emphasizing its importance for the community, “This agreement represents a significant step forward in what has been a personal and challenging situation for members of our community.”
Demolition of existing structures at the Pridham Site is scheduled for October 2025, with construction expected to commence by the end of the year. This timeline reflects the urgent need for housing solutions in the area.
City Council passed a resolution on September 8, 2025, enabling the land exchange, which underscores the commitment from all parties involved to address the pressing needs of the community. Dr. Cormack noted, “This outcome shows what can be achieved when we work together with genuine commitment to the community.”
As this important project unfolds, attention will focus on the construction progress and its impact on local residents. The collaboration between UBC, Pathways, and the City illustrates the power of unity in tackling community challenges. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
