UCalgary Students Bring Morris Panych’s ‘7 Stories’ to Life
Students from the University of Calgary are set to stage the acclaimed dark comedy 7 Stories by renowned Canadian playwright Morris Panych, with performances beginning on February 6, 2026. This production highlights the talents of both undergraduate and graduate students as they immerse themselves in hands-on theatre training.
Students Take the Lead in Production
First premiered in Vancouver in 1989, 7 Stories has become a staple in the Canadian theatre landscape. The play revolves around a man contemplating suicide from a seventh-story ledge, interrupted by self-absorbed neighbours who launch into their own monologues. The mix of dark humor and poignant themes offers a unique experience for audience members.
Malak Abdelbaky, a third-year drama student focusing on drama education and one of the show’s producers, expressed enthusiasm for the project. “This is a dark comedy, so it’s funny, it’s dark, and it’s hopeful,” she remarked. Abdelbaky, who has produced and stage-managed several productions, is gaining invaluable experience through this role.
The cast features nine senior-level acting students, all in their final year of the program. Directing the production is Jessica Buchanan, alongside graduate students completing their master’s degrees in fine arts. Additional students contribute as stage managers, dressers, and crew members, enhancing their practical experience within the theatre environment.
Building Skills and Connections
As a producer, Abdelbaky’s responsibilities extend beyond the excitement of opening night. She collaborates weekly with faculty supervisors, managing various administrative and promotional tasks essential to the production’s success. “I’ve learned about the administrative tasks required to run a real-world theatre company,” she noted, highlighting the professional connections she has made through her professors, many of whom are active in the industry.
Beyond the performance dates, 7 Stories will run from February 6-7 and February 10-14, with each show starting at 19:30 at the Reeve Theatre on the university’s campus. Abdelbaky aims to further her experience by working with semi-professional theatre productions over the summer, showcasing the dedication of UCalgary students to their craft.
The upcoming production promises to bring a fresh perspective to Panych’s classic work, reflecting the talent and commitment of the next generation of theatre artists. As the curtain rises, audiences can expect a blend of humor and depth that only 7 Stories can deliver.
