UFO Religions Explored at College of the Rockies Lecture Dec. 17
URGENT UPDATE: A thought-provoking lecture on UFO religions will take place at the College of the Rockies on December 17, 2023, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM in room KC250. Dr. C. Shaun Longstreet, Dean of Innovation in Teaching and Learning, will lead the discussion titled “Believing the Unbelievable: UFO Religions and the Human Search for Meaning.”
As interest in UFO phenomena surges globally, this event promises to illuminate how such beliefs reflect deep human needs for meaning and identity in tumultuous times. Dr. Longstreet will delve into how religious movements, particularly UFO religions like Raëism and Heaven’s Gate, arise during periods when societal norms are challenged or seem inadequate.
“Extraordinary beliefs often reflect very ordinary human needs,” Dr. Longstreet stated. He emphasizes that the search for meaning is universal, transcending cultural and temporal boundaries. This lecture is not just an exploration of fringe beliefs; it serves as a vital lens into how individuals construct their worldviews amidst uncertainty.
The upcoming talk is a part of the seasonal Museia Lecture Series, a collaboration between the College of the Rockies and the Cranbrook Public Library. While attendance is free, pre-registration is essential for managing the expected crowd. Interested attendees can learn more and register at cotr.bc.ca/museia.
Dr. Longstreet, a noted scholar with a Ph.D. in Christianity and Judaism in Antiquity from the University of Notre Dame, brings a wealth of knowledge to the table. His research spans early Judaism, Christianity, and the emergence of new religious movements, making him uniquely qualified to address the complexities of belief in the modern age.
This lecture is set against a backdrop of growing fascination with UFOs and their implications for humanity. As societal norms shift, understanding these emerging beliefs offers critical insights into the human psyche.
