Ukraine Faces Major Drone Assault as U.S. Talks Loom
BREAKING: Russia has launched a devastating aerial assault on Ukraine, firing a staggering 420 drones and 39 missiles overnight, as tensions escalate just ahead of critical peace talks in Geneva. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported the attack early Thursday, confirming that the bombardment targeted vital infrastructure and residential areas across eight regions, injuring dozens, including children.
The nighttime offensive, which included 11 ballistic missiles, highlights the urgency of the situation, occurring just as U.S. and Ukrainian envoys prepare for negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing war, now in its fifth year. Zelenskyy noted that he had spoken by phone with U.S. President Donald Trump the previous evening, thanking him for his “efforts and engagement” in the peace process.
In Geneva, Trump’s representatives, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, are expected to meet with Rustem Umerov, head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council. As the U.S. seeks to maintain momentum in its push for peace, the talks are reportedly stalled over the contentious issue of Ukrainian territory claimed by Russia.
Officials in both Ukraine and Europe have accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of merely pretending to seek peace while continuing military aggression. The discussions in Geneva aim to address a potential postwar recovery plan for Ukraine and lay groundwork for an upcoming trilateral meeting with Russian officials, possibly next week.
The Russian strikes targeted critical gas infrastructure in the Poltava region and electrical substations in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk. Emergency crews were deployed across five regions, including the capital, to respond to the devastation. Zelenskyy credited Ukraine’s air defense forces for intercepting most of the missiles, thanks to timely support from Western allies.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasized the need for increased military aid from allied countries, stating, “When the whole world demands Moscow to finally stop this senseless war, Putin bets on more terror, attacks, and aggression.” This urgent call for assistance underscores Ukraine’s reliance on foreign support to counter Russia’s larger military capabilities.
In a related development, a prisoner exchange took place, with Russia returning 1,000 bodies of fallen Ukrainian soldiers in exchange for 35 bodies of its troops, as reported by Vladimir Medinsky, head of the Russian delegation at previous talks. However, the timing of this exchange remains unclear.
The situation in Ukraine is rapidly evolving, and the impact of this latest assault is expected to resonate deeply in the ongoing negotiations. As the world watches closely, the need for a peaceful resolution has never been more urgent. Stay tuned for updates as developments unfold in this critical moment for Ukraine and the international community.
