UNBC Timberwolves Fall to Spartans: 11-0 Run Secures 64-51 Win
UPDATE: The UNBC Timberwolves suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Trinity Western Spartans, falling 64-51 after a strong second-half surge by the Spartans on Friday at the Northern Sport Centre. This defeat marks the Timberwolves’ fourth consecutive loss in the Canada West women’s basketball season.
Just over 22 minutes into the game, UNBC held a promising 10-point lead, but their inexperience proved costly as they faltered under pressure. The Spartans ignited a critical 11-0 run just two minutes into the third quarter, leveling the score and ultimately outscoring the Timberwolves 27-15 in the final frame to secure the victory.
This loss leaves the Timberwolves with an 0-4 record, as they continue to search for their first win of the season. Coach Cheryl Jean-Paul noted the challenges her team faced: “It wasn’t the start we hoped for… we really struggled to gain our footing.” The Spartans, now 3-2 in the season, showcased their depth, with Moriah Jansen leading the charge with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Collette Van der Hoven and Mavleen Chahal each contributed 12 points.
The Timberwolves initially took control, entering halftime with a 28-22 advantage. However, as the second half unfolded, UNBC struggled to maintain their composure. “We stopped moving on offense… tacky fouls… that’s when we started to fall apart,” said fourth-year forward Amrit Manak.
The Spartans capitalized on their size advantage, dominating the boards with 17 second-chance points compared to UNBC’s mere three. This disparity proved pivotal as the Timberwolves could not respond effectively to the Spartans’ offensive resurgence.
Looking ahead, both teams will clash again on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Brownridge Court, providing the Timberwolves with an immediate opportunity to bounce back. As Coach Jean-Paul remarked, “UNBC has had some tough opponents… they showed they can compete with any team in this league.”
Fans and players alike will be watching closely to see if the Timberwolves can turn their fortunes around in this rematch. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
