Unique Jailhouse Airbnb Opens in Manitoba, Bookings Surge!
UPDATE: A decommissioned RCMP detachment in the Rural Municipality of McCreary, Manitoba, has just transformed into a unique Airbnb experience, drawing attention for its two jail cell bedrooms. The rental, aptly named “the Jailhouse,” opened its doors to guests on October 1, 2023, and is already making waves in the travel community.
Rosie Peloquin, who co-owns the property with her husband after retiring from the pizza business, is thrilled with the early response. “We’ve already hosted over 20 guests during the holidays and secured a booking for a wedding this summer,” she said. The rental offers a quirky twist on traditional accommodations, featuring converted spaces where the breathalyzer and fingerprinting room now serve as the living area and kitchen.
Travel Manitoba’s vice-president of marketing, Cody Chomiak, highlighted the growing trend of “experience-led travel” in the province. He noted, “Part of that is where you stay is part of the story, not just a place to sleep.” With themed rentals like a Harry Potter suite in Lockport, the Jailhouse is poised to capitalize on this trend, providing guests with an unforgettable stay.
Located just beyond the eastern border of Riding Mountain National Park, the Jailhouse is now live on Airbnb’s platform, making it accessible for bookings. The rental’s unique concept encourages visitors to embrace the humor in its setting, with Peloquin joking, “If you drink too much, you can spend the night in jail.”
This innovative approach to lodging reflects a broader shift in travel preferences, as visitors seek more than just a conventional hotel experience. In addition to the Jailhouse, Manitoba is seeing other creative accommodations, such as ice lodges in Flin Flon and luxurious “glamping” options at Moonlit Canopy.
As demand for offbeat vacation experiences continues to rise, the Jailhouse Airbnb is perfectly positioned to attract adventurous travelers looking for a memorable getaway. Bookings are expected to surge, making this a must-visit destination for the fall and winter seasons.
Follow the latest developments as this unique lodging option gains popularity, and don’t miss your chance to experience a night in jail—without any of the usual repercussions!
