University of Ottawa Reopens Admissions for Greek and Roman Studies
UPDATE: The University of Ottawa has just announced the resumption of admissions for its honours program in Greek and Roman studies, reversing an earlier decision to pause applications due to low enrolment. This urgent development comes amid ongoing efforts to enhance the program’s appeal to prospective students.
Earlier this month, the university shocked many by stating it would halt admissions, citing a context of declining interest. Administrators indicated plans for a comprehensive overhaul of the program to attract more students. However, just yesterday, a spokesperson confirmed that the Faculty of Arts will continue to accept applications while these changes are being developed.
WATCH: A recent report highlighted the concerns of students and faculty regarding the potential phase-out of classical studies, as the university has offered Latin classes since its founding as the College of Bytown in 1848. Current enrolment stands at approximately 55 students, who will not be impacted by the recent pause in admissions.
The decision to reopen admissions has sparked mixed reactions within the academic community. Many students are relieved that their studies will continue without interruption, while educators emphasize the need for the program’s revitalization to secure its future.
As the university moves forward, all eyes will be on the upcoming changes to the Greek and Roman studies curriculum. Will this program adapt to meet modern educational demands? Stakeholders are eager to see how the university plans to enhance its classical studies offerings and ultimately boost student enrolment.
Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops. The future of classical studies at the University of Ottawa remains a pressing topic for students, faculty, and alumni alike.
