University of Regina Rams’ Erichsen Shines with 4 Touchdowns
UPDATE: The University of Regina Rams celebrated a thrilling victory in their Canada West football opener, with running back Marshall Erichsen scoring an impressive four touchdowns in a nail-biting 43-36 overtime win against the Calgary Dinos. This record-setting performance has set the stage for their highly anticipated home opener against the University of Alberta Golden Bears on Friday at 7 p.m. at Leibel Field.
The Rams faced a challenging ride home after their dramatic win, but Erichsen’s stellar performance ensured a jubilant atmosphere. Veteran center Riley Schick praised Erichsen, stating, “He’s always a guy who will come back and hang out with the O-line at the back of the bus.” This camaraderie highlights the strong team spirit as they prepare for their next challenge.
In the season opener, Erichsen not only tied but broke records, rushing for 113 yards on 27 carries, including three rushing touchdowns in the first half. He capped off his night with a decisive overtime touchdown, solidifying his position as a key player for the Rams. “I hope the O-linemen all feel a part of it,” Erichsen said, emphasizing the team’s unity and his appreciation for the offensive line’s efforts.
The Rams dominated much of the game, leading by 13 points before a late surge from Calgary that forced the match into overtime. Rams head coach Mark McConkey acknowledged the team’s strategy shift, sharing, “We learned from last year that I thought we threw too much in the red zone.” The decision to run the ball proved fruitful, leading to their victory.
As the Rams gear up for their home opener against the Golden Bears, who lost their first game 29-20 to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, attention will be on whether Erichsen can continue his record-breaking form. Fans are eager to see if the Rams can extend their winning streak and build momentum in the Canada West season.
The excitement surrounding the Rams is palpable, especially as Erichsen approaches a milestone of 1,000 rushing yards in his career, placing him just one yard shy of fifth place on the team’s all-time list. His dedication to the game and his teammates has made him a standout player, with echoes of his father’s legacy as a former Rams running back.
The upcoming match against the Golden Bears promises to be a thrilling encounter, as the Rams aim to secure another victory and fans flock to support their team. With Erichsen’s stellar performance fresh in their minds, the Rams are poised for an exciting season ahead.
