Unusual 911 Calls in B.C. Include Haircut Woes and Hornets
URGENT UPDATE: British Columbia’s emergency line has revealed an astonishing list of the most unusual 911 calls made in 2025, highlighting the bizarre reasons some residents are tying up emergency resources. Among the most outrageous: a caller distressed over their luggage exceeding flight carry-on limits and another furious about a store refusing to accept an air-fryer return.
Reported by E-Comm, which handles 99 percent of all 911 calls in B.C., these unusual calls illustrate a troubling trend as emergency lines grapple with non-emergency situations that waste valuable time. E-Comm reported that it processes approximately two million calls annually, and while most are legitimate emergencies, the influx of frivolous calls is raising alarms.
Other notable absurdities on the list include a plea for assistance with a broken dishwasher, a request for help removing a hornet from an apartment, and complaints about unsatisfactory haircuts. Disturbingly, some individuals called regarding a non-electric vehicle occupying an electric charging station and others expressed frustration over being locked out of their Airbnb.
“Every second we spend fielding questions about traffic, hornets or bad haircuts is time that could otherwise be helping someone in a life-threatening emergency situation,”
said E-Comm call taker Bailey Mitchell. This statement underscores the critical importance of reserving the 911 line for genuine emergencies, as responders must treat every call as an urgent matter until confirmed otherwise.
As 911 lines become inundated with these trivial requests, the implications for public safety are alarming. Each call that does not require police, fire, or medical assistance diverts resources away from individuals who truly need help. E-Comm is urging the public to consider the necessity of their calls before dialing.
The latest report from E-Comm serves as a wake-up call for British Columbians. It’s essential to recognize the serious nature of emergency services and to use them responsibly. As more unusual calls continue to emerge, authorities are emphasizing the need for awareness about the appropriate use of emergency services.
As we head into the new year, residents are encouraged to reflect on the implications of their actions and to prioritize genuine emergencies when dialing 911. The message is clear: let’s keep the lines open for those who truly need help.
