UPDATE: Husband Charged with Murder in Snowden Tragedy
BREAKING: A small community in Snowden is reeling after a tragic incident involving a beloved couple. On November 5 at approximately 1:20 p.m., the Nipawin RCMP responded to a wellness check request at a residence, leading to the discovery of 69-year-old Diane Searcy deceased. Her husband, 68-year-old Kevin Searcy, has been charged with second degree murder.
The couple, known for their long-lasting relationship, had moved from Calgary to Snowden seeking a quieter life. A close friend of the Searcys described them as devoted partners, emphasizing that Kevin was Diane’s primary caregiver following her dementia diagnosis. “It’s just a tragedy. I don’t think there’s any malice involved in that at all. It wasn’t hatred,” she stated, reflecting the community’s shock.
Witnesses recall the couple’s strong bond, noting they were often seen together, hand in hand. “They were together forever…like 30 years, and he loved her beyond belief,” the friend added. “He had never let her go.”
Concerns are mounting as community members wonder why Kevin, who is now in custody, did not seek help during this crisis. “There’s facilities, and that’s what everybody can’t get over in this town. Like, why? There’s so much help out there,” the friend expressed.
Another resident revealed that Diane had recently been hospitalized, and the wellness check was likely prompted by a family member’s concern. Social media comments reflect the community’s sorrow, with one long-time acquaintance describing the Searcys as a “beautiful family, full of love.”
“Dementia is awful, but this is truly damaging to a beautiful family who nothing but loved and cared for each other for many decades,” the woman wrote, extending her support to the family.
Kevin Searcy’s first court appearance is scheduled for December 10. As the investigation unfolds, the community is left grappling with the implications of this shocking event. The local hotel bar, often a gathering spot, now serves as a somber reminder of the couple’s tragic fate.
This developing story highlights the urgent need for support systems for caregivers and those suffering from dementia. As authorities continue their investigation, more details are expected to emerge.
