Urgent: 200 Affordable Homes Secured in Dartmouth and Truro
UPDATE: Nearly 200 affordable housing units will be preserved in Dartmouth and Truro, thanks to a partnership between the provincial government and the community organization Rooted. This urgent initiative, announced earlier today, involves an impressive investment of $7 million in grants and loans aimed at securing the future of these essential homes.
The province confirmed that Rooted has successfully purchased three properties in Dartmouth and three in Truro, including key locations at 19 Primrose Street and 2 and 4 Franklyn Court. This strategic acquisition will ensure that current tenants can continue residing in their affordable homes, which will remain accessible for a minimum of 30 years or until the mortgages mature.
Rooted’s CEO, Nick Russell, highlighted the importance of this development, stating, “The impact of housing as critical infrastructure extends to job creation, local economic development, and most importantly, creates the environment for communities to thrive.” This statement underscores the deep community benefits tied to affordable housing solutions.
Since 2021, the provincial government has invested over $283 million in creating and preserving 3,054 affordable units, demonstrating a strong commitment to addressing housing needs in Nova Scotia. Today’s announcement further solidifies that commitment, marking a significant step in ensuring that residents have access to stable housing.
Moving forward, all eyes will be on the implementation of this initiative. The preservation of these units not only protects current tenants but also sets a precedent for future housing projects in the region. Residents and community advocates eagerly await further details on the impact this partnership will have on the local housing market.
Stay tuned for more updates as this developing story unfolds. The preservation of affordable housing is more than just numbers; it represents a lifeline for families and individuals striving for stability in their communities.
