UPDATE: Despite a steady drizzle, approximately 200 participants donned pink attire and took to the streets on October 15, 2023, in Brandon, Manitoba, for the CIBC Run for the Cure. This annual event aims to raise critical funds and awareness for breast cancer research.

The run kicked off at Assiniboine College at 1430 Victoria Ave. East, organized by the Canadian Cancer Society. Participants included individuals directly affected by breast cancer, as well as family and friends who showed their support.

Among them was Delores Hessian, 58, who participated in memory of her sister, Michele, who tragically passed away from breast cancer earlier this year. “This is the first run without her,” Hessian said, tears in her eyes. Michele had a goal to raise $6,000 for breast cancer awareness, which Hessian’s family surpassed, raising over $9,000 under the team name “Michele’s Breast Friends Forever.” “We’re doing it as a family,” she added, highlighting the emotional weight of the day.

Another notable team, the Waves of Hope, a breast cancer survivor dragon boat team, raised over $3,500. Participant Marcy Goetz, 47, shared her own cancer journey, saying, “Once you’ve finished your cancer treatment, life doesn’t just return to normal.” Goetz emphasized the importance of community support, noting how joining Waves of Hope has inspired her to live fully after cancer.

Participants like Shital Maisuria, 35, also shared their stories of survival. Diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in 2020, she credited the Canadian Cancer Society for helping her through her darkest moments. “The Cancer Society gave me my hope. They gave me a second chance,” she stated, urging attendees to cherish every moment.

As of now, the event has raised $57,000 with donations still being accepted until the end of the calendar year. Ashley MacDonald, director of Brandon’s Run for the Cure, confirmed that funds will support breast cancer research across various centers. “We are really thankful for the participants that came out,” she said, despite the dreary weather.

The CIBC Run for the Cure is part of a nationwide initiative held in over 50 communities across Canada, featuring both 1-kilometre and 5-kilometre distance options. With emotional stories and strong community support, the event continues to shed light on the ongoing battle against breast cancer.

Stay tuned for more updates as participants and organizers reflect on the day’s achievements and the impact of their fundraising efforts.
