UPDATE: A shocking grizzly bear attack in Bella Coola has left three children and one adult injured, according to the BC Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS). The incident occurred around 1:35 PM on November 20, 2023, near the Old Trail close to 4 Mile. Victims were part of a school group when the bear emerged unexpectedly from the forest.

The adult and three children were swiftly treated at Bella Coola Hospital and are now being transported to Vancouver for further medical care. Multiple teachers acted heroically, deploying pepper spray and a “bear banger” to fend off the aggressive grizzly, said BCCOS Insp. Kevin Van Damme in a video update released today.

Despite extensive search efforts throughout the night, conservation officers were unable to locate the bear. Additional officers have been dispatched to the scene as BCCOS continues to gather and analyze evidence. Preliminary reports indicate that the bear may have been previously injured, raising concerns about its behavior.

“This incident is distressing for our community,” stated Van Damme. “We are in close contact with the Nuxalk Nation, and we appreciate their collaboration in ensuring community awareness and safety.” He emphasized that the thoughts of the service are with the victims and their families, wishing them a full recovery.

Nuxalk Nation Chief Samuel Schooner expressed deep concern for the community. “This unprecedented grizzly bear attack occurred without provocation and has resulted in significant trauma to our community,” he said. “We are incredibly proud of our teachers and students who responded heroically in the moment to protect one another. The outcome could have been much worse.”

Authorities are urging the community to steer clear of the forested area and river near 4 Mile. Residents are advised to stay indoors until further notice to ensure safety. “At present, we are focused on taking care of our community members who are affected by this horrific event,” Schooner added.

The B.C. provincial government is set to hold a press conference regarding the incident at 2 PM on November 21. Community members are encouraged to report any bear sightings in the area to the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) line at 1-877-952-7277.

As the investigation unfolds, updates will be provided to keep the community informed on this urgent situation.
