Urgent: 300 Nunavut Homeowners to Receive $7,200 Relief Now

URGENT UPDATE: Starting now, up to 300 homeowners in Nunavut will receive substantial maintenance relief through a new program aimed at easing the financial burden of homeownership in the territory. The Nunavut Housing Corporation has just announced the launch of the Homeowner Support Benefit, which will provide $7,200 annually to eligible homeowners.
The initiative, revealed on September 16, 2023, by Lorne Kusugak, minister responsible for the Nunavut Housing Corporation, marks a pivotal expansion of the Canada–Nunavut Housing Benefit, previously designed solely for renters. Kusugak stated, “We anticipate that up to 300 households will be eligible in the first year, with more supported as the program grows.”
With $14 million allocated for distribution until 2028, this benefit is a critical lifeline for homeowners facing high maintenance costs. To qualify, applicants must be Nunavummiut who own their homes and use them as their primary residence. They must also meet specific regional income thresholds and not receive a housing allowance from the Government of Nunavut. The average maximum household income to receive the benefit is $202,000, varying by community.
Applications for the Homeowner Support Benefit will be available on the Nunavut Housing Corporation’s website, making it easier for eligible residents to access this financial support. Kusugak emphasized the importance of this initiative: “By removing barriers and creating flexible supports, we are helping families stay in their homes, reducing pressures on public housing.”
This new benefit is set to transform the landscape of housing support in Nunavut, offering immediate relief to those who qualify. Residents are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to take advantage of this opportunity.
Stay tuned for further developments as the program rolls out and more homeowners may become eligible. Sharing this important news can help spread the word and ensure that those in need are informed about this vital support.
