UPDATE: Concerns are escalating over a rapidly expanding homeless encampment along Highway 97 in Vernon, B.C. Local residents report significant environmental hazards, including garbage, propane tanks, and even a treehouse structure, all situated dangerously close to a creek.

Denyse Chambers, a concerned resident, expressed her frustration: “The environment to me is the biggest concern.” Chambers has reached out to multiple agencies but has faced silence or redirection, saying, “Nobody replies.”

The situation is dire, with nearby businesses, including hotels, also raising alarms about loitering and potential security issues. The city’s fire chief, David Lind, has voiced serious concerns regarding fire risks posed by the encampment, stating, “We are aware of the structure and are concerned about the risks the structure poses to the occupants, responders, and the environment.”

Despite the encampment being located within city limits, the Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MOTT) has claimed jurisdiction, complicating the response. In a recent communication, MOTT confirmed they are coordinating with the Ministry of Housing to prioritize safety at the site but have not provided a timeline for cleanup.

Residents like Chambers are calling for immediate action, urging authorities to clear the camp, especially those near sensitive environmental areas. “They need to find a place for these people,” she emphasized, highlighting the urgent need for a sustainable solution.

Officials from the Ministry of Environment and Parks advised that the public can report pollution concerns through the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) line at 1-877-952-7277. However, it remains unclear what specific measures will be implemented to address the growing hazards.

As the encampment continues to expand, the lack of clear communication and action from officials raises alarms for both residents and business owners in the area. With urgent calls for intervention growing louder, the situation remains fluid, and the community awaits decisive action from the authorities.
