Urgent Air Quality Advisory Issued as Smoke Engulfs Southern B.C.
BREAKING: An air quality advisory is now in effect across Southern British Columbia as thick smoke blankets the region, obscuring the typically stunning mountain views. The advisory includes areas such as the Central, South, and North Okanagan, with wildfire smoke continuing to drift in from various sources.
The current conditions are serious. Brian Proctor, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, stated, “We’re seeing some smoke out there — it’s not particularly problematic overall. But under those dense smoke plumes, the health risk increases.” Residents are urged to stay informed and take precautions.
Wildfires not only from British Columbia but also from eastern Oregon and eastern Washington are contributing to the smoke. Proctor added, “There’s a lot of smoke out there, and the biggest impact will be where it gets concentrated.” The air quality advisory is expected to persist for the next 24 to 48 hours.
As the situation develops, cooler temperatures may provide some relief; however, significant improvements depend on weather conditions, including increased humidity and precipitation. Proctor emphasized, “We need to cool things off, increase humidity, and get those fires put out for the season.”
Residents with pre-existing health issues are particularly vulnerable. “If you have a compromised respiratory system — if you suffer from asthma, lung cancer, or any condition that affects your breathing — you’re going to feel the impact of this smoke,” warned Proctor.
This event may not be an isolated incident. Proctor indicated that late-season fire activity could signal a troubling trend. “Years ago, I could’ve said this was rare. But now, with what we’ve seen over the last number of wildfire seasons, fire weather is starting earlier and stretching well into the fall,” he noted.
As the advisory remains in place, communities across Southern B.C. are urged to stay indoors as much as possible, especially those most at risk. The situation is being monitored closely, and updates will follow as more information becomes available. Stay tuned for the latest developments as this story continues to unfold.
