UPDATE: BC Hydro has just announced a significant water release from the Comox Dam beginning this evening, September 29, 2023, and continuing into next week. Residents in the Comox Valley are urged to exercise caution due to increased water levels along the Puntledge River.

Starting tonight, the discharge rate will surge from 16 cubic metres per second to 40 cubic metres per second. This crucial action is in response to anticipated weather conditions, aiming to maintain operational flexibility during the storm season and ensure adequate capacity to manage incoming inflows.

BC Hydro is implementing a public safety advisory for the Barber’s Hole and Nymph Falls areas. Temporary safety signage will be installed to warn of the rising waters. “This evening we will increase discharge from the Comox Dam to manage water levels effectively,” a BC Hydro spokesperson stated.

The current reservoir level stands at 133.4 metres, having risen 2.0 metres since September, a necessary recovery following a dry summer. BC Hydro intends to maintain these levels to mitigate flood risks. With the upcoming release, inflows into the reservoir are expected to remain above normal for the next seven to ten days.

Authorities emphasize the importance of heeding safety advisories as the situation develops. Residents and visitors are strongly encouraged to stay away from the riverbanks and remain alert to changing conditions.

As the water release unfolds, BC Hydro will continue to monitor levels and provide updates. For the latest developments, stay tuned.
