Urgent Alert: Distraction Thieves Target Seniors in Cambridge
URGENT UPDATE: Distraction thieves have targeted an elderly couple in Cambridge, leaving one victim with minor injuries. The shocking incident occurred on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, shortly after 2:30 PM, near Green Vista Drive and Crawford Crescent, close to Franklin Boulevard and Can-Amera Parkway.
According to Waterloo Regional Police, a man driving a vehicle approached the couple while they were walking. He asked the husband for directions, creating a moment of distraction. Meanwhile, two female suspects—one described as possibly 15- to 17-years-old—approached the elderly wife, claiming they wanted to bless her for Diwali.
In a brazen attempt, the suspects grabbed the woman’s hands and tried to place a necklace around her neck. When she resisted, the thieves forcibly snatched her existing necklace, resulting in light injuries. All three suspects quickly fled the scene in their vehicle.
Police have described the male driver as South Asian, in his mid-40s, with a larger build and brown hair. The female accomplice is also South Asian, in her mid-40s, larger build, and wearing a head covering. The younger female suspect was noted to have a slim build and wore dark clothing.
This alarming incident is a stark reminder of the dangers facing vulnerable members of the community. The police urgently seek assistance from the public. Witnesses, especially those with security camera footage from nearby homes, are encouraged to come forward.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Waterloo Regional Police at 519-570-9777 or reach out anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
