Urgent Alert: Landslide Near Sayward Triggers Water Supply Crisis
UPDATE: A significant landslide near Sayward, British Columbia, has raised urgent concerns about the village’s drinking water supply. The incident occurred at Newscastle Creek, approximately one kilometer outside the village, on October 23 at 9:15 p.m.. Residents reported hearing the slide, which has led to immediate action from local authorities.
The Strathcona Regional District confirmed that while no damage to property was reported, the landslide has resulted in increased turbidity levels in the water supply. As a precaution, the village’s water treatment plant was temporarily shut down to prevent excessive sediment from entering the system. Sayward, home to around 350 residents, is located about an hour’s drive north of Campbell River.
As of now, Sayward Public Works is actively monitoring the water system. Although the treatment plant and village water reservoir have resumed operations, officials are urging residents to conserve water strictly for essential use only. The district warns that further temporary shutdowns may be necessary due to ongoing sediment issues caused by heavy rainfall and shifting materials.
In response to the situation, a Level 1 Emergency Operations Centre has been activated to closely monitor the landslide’s impact on the community’s drinking water source. Officials are seeking a technical assessment of the landslide to identify potential remediation and mitigation strategies.
Campbell River Search and Rescue captured drone footage of the affected area on November 20, with funding support from the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness. This footage provides critical insights into the landslide’s extent and its implications for the village.
Residents are advised to refrain from calling 911 for updates regarding the landslide and water system, as officials work to manage the situation effectively. Immediate measures are in place to ensure the safety and health of the community as they navigate this challenge.
Stay tuned for more updates as this situation develops. The Strathcona Regional District is committed to keeping the public informed about any changes regarding the water supply and the ongoing response to the landslide.
