Urgent Alert: Snow Forces Chain Requirements on B.C.’s Coquihalla Highway
URGENT UPDATE: Drivers are facing treacherous conditions on B.C.’s Coquihalla Highway as heavy snow begins to fall. Authorities at DriveBC have just announced that the Box Canyon commercial chain-up is now in effect, requiring all drivers to comply with winter chain and tire signage. The alert was issued early this morning, November 2, 2025.
Webcams along the highway show roads blanketed in snow, with visibility severely affected by fog. A recent video captured a truck struggling to navigate the snow-drifted roadway, highlighting the urgent need for caution. Environment Canada forecasts up to 10 centimetres of snow throughout the day, particularly impacting the stretch between Hope and Merritt.
As of this morning, conditions remain challenging, with drivers urged to take extra precautions. The weather is expected to improve later today, with flurries diminishing and a 60 percent chance of clouds in the afternoon. However, the snow chance will drop to 30 percent tonight, before rising again to 40 percent by Monday afternoon.
Authorities remind commercial drivers traveling outside the Greater Vancouver and Greater Victoria areas during winter months that they must carry chains or acceptable traction devices. This requirement is crucial for trucks weighing between 5,000 kg and 11,794 kg LGVW, unless equipped with winter-rated tires displaying the 3-peaked mountain and snowflake symbol.
The provincial regulations for winter tires and chain requirements on mountain passes and high snowfall areas remain in effect until April 30. Drivers are encouraged to stay updated via the DriveBC website for the latest information on chain-ups and road conditions.
Stay safe and drive carefully as winter weather continues to impact travel in the region.
