Urgent Boil Water Order Issued for 800 Homes in Saint John
UPDATE: A critical boil water order has just been issued for approximately 800 properties in the Forest Hills area of Saint John. This alert, announced late Friday night, is a direct result of infrastructure improvements related to the ongoing McAllister Drive water main replacement project.
Authorities from the City of Saint John confirmed that the Department of Health advised this necessary precaution as a planned overnight water main shutdown is underway. This shutdown began on Friday at 9 p.m. and is set to last until Saturday at 9 a.m.. City officials emphasized that this disruption is vital for safely completing a critical phase of the infrastructure upgrade.
While the boil water order is in effect, residents are urged to boil water for at least one minute before consumption, including for brushing teeth, making juices, coffee, or tea, and washing uncooked vegetables. The city stated, “Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water,” highlighting the potential health risks posed by low chlorine levels which could lead to harmful bacteria in the supply.
During this time, the water remains safe for bathing and showering. Residents can also wash dishes in hot, soapy water or use a dishwasher, as these activities do not pose the same health risks.
Officials are particularly concerned about vulnerable populations, including those with compromised immune systems, who may be more susceptible to illness due to the presence of bacteria. Symptoms of potential contamination include diarrhea, cramps, nausea, and headaches.
The McAllister Drive water main replacement project is projected to wrap up by September 12. City officials stated, “This important work will help ensure safe, reliable water service for residents in Forest Hills and along Golden Grove Road for years to come.” By replacing aging pipes now, they aim to prevent future service disruptions and maintain a strong water system.
Residents should remain vigilant and follow all recommended safety measures until the boil water order is officially lifted. Stay informed by downloading the latest updates via the CTV News App and be prepared for further announcements from city officials.
This situation is developing; more updates will follow as officials monitor water quality and safety.
