Urgent Call for Donations to B.C. Food Banks This Holiday Season
URGENT UPDATE: Food banks across British Columbia are sounding the alarm as they prepare for a significant surge in demand this holiday season. With the looming threat of increased grocery prices due to U.S. tariffs, local food banks are urgently appealing for donations to ensure families can enjoy this festive time without the stress of food insecurity.
Nick Johnson, manager of member services at Food Banks B.C., emphasizes the critical need for donations of both non-perishable and perishable food items. “Protein-rich foods like canned meats, beans, and peanut butter are always high in demand,” Johnson stated. This appeal comes as the region braces for a possible increase in food costs that could leave many struggling.
The top 10 most requested donation items include canned fruit and vegetables, pasta and pasta sauce, rice, oats, soups, snacks, and essential toiletries. While many donations are typically non-perishable, Johnson notes that fresh food is equally vital. “Almost every food bank in the network across the province has refrigeration or freezer capacity,” he said, highlighting the need for donations like meat, eggs, and dairy.
The urgency is amplified by the launch of the Make the Season Kind campaign by CBC B.C. on December 5. This initiative aims to raise funds directly for local food banks, allowing them to purchase the items they need most. Johnson mentioned, “Cash is king,” as many food banks are expanding their food purchasing budgets to meet increasing demands.
Many food banks also prioritize items for babies, such as baby food and formula. These essential items are often in short supply, and Johnson urges donors to consider them when giving. Additionally, food banks are striving to accommodate dietary needs, including gluten-free and halal options, to serve all community members.
As the holiday season approaches, it’s crucial to remember what to avoid donating. Items that are opened or past their best-before dates are typically discarded, adding strain on food bank staff. “Don’t be cleaning out grandma’s pantry,” Johnson advised, urging the community to provide fresh, unexpired goods.
With the holiday season just around the corner, the call for donations has never been more urgent. Those interested in contributing can visit the CBC website at cbc.ca/kindbc to donate directly or contact their local food bank to inquire about specific needs. Your support can make a significant difference this winter, ensuring that no one in British Columbia has to go hungry during the holidays.
