Urgent Update: Greater Victoria is in need of host families to welcome 155 Japanese high school students arriving this October as part of a cultural exchange program. Muskoka Language International (MLI) is calling for local residents to step up and provide a loving home for these visitors, who will be here from October 18 to 26, 2023.

Cheryl Lee, COO of MLI Education Group, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “This is a special moment for us to show off our B.C. hospitality to our visitors.” This annual exchange, which has been a tradition for over a decade, is resuming after disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in an urgent need for more host families.

Families in areas like Sooke, Metchosin, Langford, Victoria, and Saanich are invited to participate. “We urgently ask people to join us and welcome a student for four or five nights,” Lee urged. Hosts will receive financial compensation and can choose to take in one or two students aged 14 to 16.

During their stay, students will attend local schools, including Pacific Christian School from October 18-22, and Royal Bay, Edward Milne, or Belmont Secondary from October 21-26. This experience not only enriches the lives of the students but also provides a memorable opportunity for families.

Lynette, a local coordinator at MLI, expressed her gratitude for the community’s support. “Hosting an international student is an enriching and memorable experience for both the students and the families involved,” she stated. She emphasized the joy of sharing local experiences, such as visiting pumpkin patches and beachcombing, with the students.

Those interested in hosting or referring potential families are encouraged to act quickly. Contact Lynette directly at 250-216-4126 or email [email protected]. More information can be found at mlihomestay.com/hosts.

With the arrival date rapidly approaching, your involvement could make a significant impact on these students’ Canadian experience. Join the effort to create lasting memories and cultural exchanges in Greater Victoria today!
