Urgent Call: Lethbridge Food Banks Desperately Need Water Donations
UPDATE: The city-wide water drive in Lethbridge has officially run dry, prompting the Interfaith Food Bank to issue an urgent plea for immediate bottled water donations. Both the Interfaith and Lethbridge Food Banks are calling on the community to step up as they face a critical shortage of water and funds, just as temperatures are set to soar this August.
So far, nearly 40,000 bottles of water have been distributed with the support of various outreach organizations. However, as of today, August 1, 2023, both food banks find themselves completely out of supplies. “When somebody doesn’t have the ability to get out of the heat, we obviously have heat emergencies and things that can happen to you physically,” said Danielle McIntyre, executive director of the Interfaith Food Bank. “Just the simple act of providing that to someone makes them feel like they matter and someone cares about them.”
The urgent need for bottled water is compounded by rising temperatures, which can pose serious health risks for vulnerable individuals in the community. “We are asking the community for help as we are completely out of water and funds,” McIntyre added.
Both food banks are accepting monetary donations and bottled water until the end of the month. Community members can contribute at designated drop-off points across the city or through online donation platforms. This is not just a call for water; it’s a call for compassion in an increasingly challenging environment.
The city-wide water drive is crucial as it provides essential hydration to those in need during the hottest months of the year. Authorities stress that every bottle donated can make a significant difference in someone’s life. “We need to remind ourselves that this is about community support and looking after one another,” McIntyre emphasized.
Residents are encouraged to act quickly. With the demand for water expected to rise, every contribution counts. The food banks are counting on the generosity of Lethbridge residents to help replenish their supplies and ensure that no one in the community suffers from heat-related emergencies.
As the situation develops, updates will be provided on the food banks’ official social media channels. Stay tuned for more information and find out how you can help make a difference today.
