UPDATE: Chilliwack authorities have announced urgent debris removal work on the Keith Wilson Bridge over the Vedder Canal, effective Monday, December 15. The city confirmed that this work is essential due to forecasted heavy rainfall and rising flood risks.

As part of the operation, there will be single-lane alternating traffic from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. between Boundary Road and Chadsey Road. This comes as the BC River Forecast Centre upgraded the flood status for the Chilliwack River and its tributaries to a flood warning, indicating a critical situation for local residents.

The city reported that significant rainfall is expected to begin late Sunday night, raising alarm for potential localized flooding and debris slides in the area. In a statement, city officials warned,

“With the upcoming heavy rainfall and weather conditions starting tonight into Monday evening, there is an increased risk of localized flooding and debris slides.”

Residents are urged to remain vigilant. Local conditions are being actively monitored by city crews in conjunction with the BC River Forecast Centre and Environment and Climate Change Canada. Updates will be shared through social media and the city’s official website, chilliwack.com/floodwatch.

Residents are advised to take precautions: avoid driving through flooded roadways, stay clear of rivers and creeks, and check on neighbors who may require assistance. Localized flooding reports can be made via the City of Chilliwack app or by contacting the Operations department at 604.793.2810.

For those in need of sandbags, they are available at Heritage Park (44140 Luckakuck Way) by the sani-dump station and at Yarrow Sports Field (3635 Savoy Road). Residents are reminded to bring their own shovels.

Stay tuned for more updates as the situation develops. This is a crucial time for community safety in Chilliwack as the threat of flooding looms large.
