Urgent Cold Warnings: Wind-Chill Near -45°C Across Prairies

UPDATE: Extreme cold warnings are in effect across the northern Prairies today, with wind-chill temperatures plummeting to a dangerous -45°C in some areas. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, residents in northern Alberta, much of central and southern Saskatchewan, and southern Manitoba should brace for frostbite-risk conditions.

Frostbite alerts are particularly urgent for those in northern Saskatchewan, including La Loche, where the mercury is expected to drop drastically. In most regions, wind-chill factors will hover around -40°C, creating life-threatening conditions for anyone exposed to the elements.

Authorities are stressing the importance of staying bundled up, as the severe cold poses an immediate risk of frostbite and hypothermia. “We’re urging everyone to limit their time outdoors,” an official from Environment and Climate Change Canada stated.

While conditions are expected to improve gradually from west to east across the Prairies over the weekend, the harsh weather is not finished yet. In addition to the bitter cold, southeastern Alberta, particularly near Medicine Hat, is forecasted to receive up to 25 centimeters of snow, compounding travel and safety issues.
