Urgent Condolences Flow to Hollow Water After Mass Stabbing

UPDATE: Condolences are pouring in for the Hollow Water First Nation following a horrific mass stabbing incident that left one woman dead and eight others injured. This tragic event occurred on September 5, 2025, northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and has drawn comparisons to a similar attack three years ago on the James Smith Cree Nation in Saskatchewan.
Authorities report that an 18-year-old woman lost her life in the attack, allegedly carried out by her 26-year-old brother. The suspect died shortly after in a collision while fleeing in a stolen vehicle, crashing into a police car responding to the scene. This devastating incident has sparked a wave of sympathy and support from across the nation.
The James Smith Cree Nation, which experienced its own mass stabbing in 2022 that resulted in 11 deaths and 17 injuries, has publicly expressed solidarity with Hollow Water. In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, they said, “From our nation to theirs, we send strength, compassion, and the reminder that they are not alone. We walk together in spirit.”
This tragedy underscores the ongoing issues of violence affecting Indigenous communities in Canada. As the victims and their families grapple with this immense loss, the need for support and healing has never been more urgent.
In other news today, all eyes are on Statistics Canada as it prepares to release its labour force survey for August, which is expected to show a modest gain of 10,000 jobs but a rise in the unemployment rate to 7%. This report comes just ahead of the Bank of Canada’s interest rate decision on September 17.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney has kicked off the 50th Toronto International Film Festival with a stirring speech that celebrated Canadian culture, highlighting the importance of unity and resilience. He is set to make further announcements regarding Canada’s strategic sectors at 11:00 a.m. ET today, following discussions aimed at supporting industries impacted by U.S. tariffs.
In addition, Canada is hosting U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson and other G7 leaders this week in Ottawa, where discussions will focus on global legislative challenges, including online disinformation and political polarization.
As these stories develop, stay tuned for updates on this tragic incident and its wider implications for the community and the nation.
