A single-vehicle crash on January 4 caused a significant power outage in Sicamous and Mara last night, leaving numerous residents in the dark. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Highway 97A near Mervyn Road, where a southbound Ford F-350 lost control, collided with a hydro pole, and rolled onto its roof in a ditch.

Emergency responders, including the Sicamous RCMP and Sicamous Fire Rescue, rushed to the scene. “We had to wait for BC Hydro to confirm the area was safe due to downed power lines before we could assist the driver,” said Sgt. Murray McNeil in a media release. The driver was swiftly extracted from the wreck and transported to Vernon Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash resulted in extensive power outages as BC Hydro worked diligently to replace the destroyed pole. Authorities reported that road conditions were extremely slippery at the time of the crash, contributing to the incident. As crews continue to address the damage, residents are experiencing an ongoing power disruption.

This situation underscores the importance of safe driving in hazardous conditions. As the community awaits power restoration, updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
