UPDATE 11:15 a.m. The Drought Hill wildfire continues to be held as firefighters battle the blaze that has now reached 57 hectares in size, according to the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS). Currently, 41 crew members are on the scene, actively working alongside the Peachland Fire Department to manage the situation.

As of this morning, August 2, 2023, BCWS warns residents to steer clear of emergency personnel both on the ground and in the air. “Aircraft will use Okanagan Lake as a water source,” BCWS stated in their latest update. Firefighting aircraft will be deployed as needed throughout the day.

Despite the blaze being categorized as “held,” the situation remains precarious. Highway 97 is experiencing single-lane traffic in both directions due to the fire response efforts. According to DriveBC, this traffic disruption extends from Buchanan Road to Drought Road, covering nearly two kilometers. Crews will remain on-site, and a further update from DriveBC is expected at 4 p.m. today.

The impact on the local community is significant, with an evacuation alert in place for 118 properties. Residents are advised to be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

BC Wildfire Service has not provided additional updates for today, but the wildfire’s status is closely monitored. As conditions evolve throughout the day, residents and travelers are urged to stay informed and heed official warnings.

Stay tuned for further developments on this ongoing situation.
