UPDATE: An early morning fire caused by an e-bike battery has displaced 11 people from a home in Vancouver. Firefighters responded to the scene on the 2900 block of East Georgia Street at 5:45 a.m. today, following reports of flames and thick smoke.

According to Matthew Trudeau from Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services, the blaze erupted in the basement, ignited by a battery charging for an e-bike. Fortunately, all residents managed to escape, but two individuals sustained injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition.

Residents reported a chaotic scene, with neighbor Chanel Carson describing the moment she heard a loud rumble and breaking glass. “There was just … so much smoke everywhere,” she recounted. “It was terrifying to see the flames and smoke.”

Fire investigators found multiple e-bikes and batteries being charged inside the home, with at least one battery failing and causing the fire to spread rapidly. Trudeau emphasized the importance of correct battery maintenance, warning that modifications or aftermarket replacements can lead to dangerous failures.

“The risk of danger is there when they do fail, and they do fail sometimes quite spectacularly,” Trudeau stated. He urged residents to use only manufacturer-approved batteries and replace any that are damaged immediately.

This incident comes amid rising concerns regarding e-bike battery safety. Last year, Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services responded to approximately one fire per week linked to e-bike batteries, a trend that appears to be continuing in 2023.

As authorities assess the damage and provide assistance to the displaced families, residents are left reflecting on the risks associated with e-bikes, particularly for those who rely on them for their livelihoods. Many in the area work as delivery drivers, making this incident even more impactful.
