Urgent Evacuation Order for 371 Properties in Abbotsford Due to Flooding
UPDATE: The City of Abbotsford has declared a local state of emergency and issued an urgent evacuation order for 371 properties in the Sumas Prairie West area due to severe flooding risks. This order was announced late Wednesday evening, December 10, 2025, and residents in affected zones must evacuate immediately.
Floodwaters are expected to rise significantly by Thursday morning, heightening the urgency for residents to leave. Evacuation alerts have also been issued for nearby areas, including Clayburn Village and Sumas Prairie East. Emergency officials are actively advising residents to stay informed and comply with evacuation protocols.
Abbotsford’s evacuation order encompasses properties south of Highway 1, extending east from Potter Road to Vye Road, and includes neighborhoods along North and South Parallel Road east of Whatcom Road. For a comprehensive interactive map detailing the evacuation zones, click here.
Abbotsford Mayor Ross Siemens and Emergency Operations Centre Director Erick Peterson have confirmed that the Nooksack River is projected to crest near major flood stages, prompting this emergency response. They stressed that the decision to evacuate was made based on the latest modeling data and consultations with provincial officials and Whatcom County.
In response to the evacuations, the City has established a reception center at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre located at 2499 McMillan Road. This center is ready to provide immediate shelter and assistance for those affected. Evacuated residents are required to check in with the center either in person or online within 24 hours to ensure their safety.
For farmers under evacuation orders who need assistance with livestock, the City advises reaching out to industry associations that are coordinating with the Ministry of Agriculture for support.
City officials urge residents to follow these critical evacuation steps:
– Gather family members and, if possible, assist neighbors needing transportation.
– Take essential items such as medications, wallets, and keys only if they are readily available.
– Ensure pets are secured in kennels or on leashes.
– Shut off all gas and electrical appliances, except for refrigerators and freezers.
– Close all windows and doors and latch but do not lock gates.
– Use main roads to exit the evacuation area and register at the reception center.
As the situation develops, residents are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates from local authorities. The City of Abbotsford is committed to keeping the public informed as this urgent situation unfolds.
