Urgent Evacuations in North Frontenac as Wildfire Rages On
UPDATE: Residents in the Ompah area of North Frontenac are being evacuated as a fast-moving wildfire threatens their homes. Firefighters are currently battling the blaze, which ignited between South Lavant Road and Snow Road, prompting urgent safety measures.
The fire led to the closure of Road 509 shortly before 6 p.m. on July 15, 2023, from north of Mississippi Station to south of Ompah. Just an hour later, the Frontenac OPP confirmed via social media that the fire is spreading north and east, intensified by strong winds.
“Residents in that area are evacuating,” the OPP announced, emphasizing the immediate danger. By 10:15 p.m., North Frontenac Township updated its website urging residents to stay alert, stating that the Emergency Control Group is actively monitoring the situation. The OPP has also indicated that officers will conduct door-to-door checks if further evacuations become necessary.
The township has opened evacuation centers to assist displaced residents, with locations at the Snow Road Community Hall (14073 Road 509) and the Ompah Community Hall (10200 Road 509).
According to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, much of Frontenac County, particularly the area north of Verona, is currently considered at high risk for forest fires. This alarming situation underscores the urgency and potential for significant damage, as residents brace for the worst.
As developments unfold, authorities urge all residents in the affected areas to adhere to evacuation orders and remain vigilant. Follow local news sources for the latest updates on the wildfire and safety measures in place.
