Urgent: First Snowfall of Season Hits Greater Toronto Area Sunday
UPDATE: The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is bracing for its first snowfall of the season this Sunday, November 5, 2023, as Environment Canada forecasts significant snow accumulation. Residents are urged to prepare now as 2 to 10 centimeters of snow is expected throughout the day.
Meteorologist Victoria Nurse warns that areas further inland, such as Vaughan, Markham, and Brampton, could see up to 5 centimeters of snow by Sunday afternoon, while locations closer to Lake Ontario may experience lesser amounts. Highs are forecasted to reach just 1 C with lows plunging to -5 C overnight.
As the snow settles, Nurse advises residents to install winter tires promptly. “Motorists should expect difficult winter driving conditions on Sunday,” she stated, noting that this could lead to increased traffic delays.
In addition to snow, the forecast indicates potential flurries on Monday with a low of -3 C in the evening. The urgency surrounding these weather conditions is palpable, as drivers are reminded to take extra precautions on the roads.
Sgt. Kerry Schmidt from the Ontario Provincial Police emphasizes the importance of winter readiness. “Winter is on its way. It’s coming whether we like it or not,” he posted on social media, highlighting the need for drivers to adjust to changing conditions. He recommends checking washer fluid levels and retorquing wheel fasteners before hitting the snowy streets.
With winter officially knocking at the door, residents are encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary safety measures. This weekend’s snowfall marks a significant shift in seasonal weather patterns, reminding all in the GTA that winter driving requires heightened vigilance.
As the situation develops, keep an eye on local weather reports and prepare for a potentially challenging Sunday commute. Share this information to help others stay safe on the roads!
