Urgent Flood Watch Issued for North Bay District Amid Heavy Rain

URGENT UPDATE: A flood watch has just been issued for parts of the City of North Bay as heavy rainfall continues to drench the region. Following two days of significant rainfall, the North Bay Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) and the Ministry of Nature Resources (MNR) have warned residents to prepare for potential flooding in low-lying areas.
As of today, December 31, 2023, officials are predicting an additional 25 to 30 mm of rain in the North Bay district, exacerbated by a low-pressure system moving through the area. Angela Mills, NBMCA Flood Duty Officer, stated, “While water levels are currently at or below normal for this time of year, forecast rain-on-snow combined with frozen ground will trigger increased runoff.”
The weather outlook indicates that this low-pressure system will bring warm temperatures and continuous rain through today and tomorrow. Residents are urged to stay alert as localized flooding could occur in areas that are prone to drainage issues.
Mills added, “Residents should keep a close watch on conditions and exercise caution around lakes, rivers, and streams.” The MNR has also highlighted that lower-lying portions of known flood-prone areas may be affected to varying degrees.
Officials expect the weather system to gradually taper off starting Monday, but daytime temperatures throughout the province will remain between 0 to 10 degrees Celsius, with nighttime temperatures staying well above freezing until mid-next week. This combination of precipitation and widespread snow melt is likely to elevate water levels in local waterways.
“Residents and visitors should exercise caution while around waterbodies and maintain close supervision of children and pets,” reads the MNR statement.
Both the NBMCA and MNR will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary. Local municipalities are also being kept informed as conditions evolve.
Residents are encouraged to take proactive measures to ensure their safety during this developing situation. Stay tuned for further updates on the weather and flood conditions in the North Bay area.
