Urgent Flu Outbreak Hits Saskatchewan, NDP Calls for Action
BREAKING: Saskatchewan is facing a severe outbreak of Influenza A, with nearly 50% of current cases affecting individuals under 19 years old. As hospitals become overwhelmed, the NDP is demanding an urgent public campaign to increase flu vaccination rates, which currently sit at a concerning 20%.
Officials report that test positivity rates for Influenza A have soared to 40%, with the predominant strain proving particularly aggressive this season. The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) reveals a troubling 13.5% increase in confirmed cases in the first half of December alone.
“Healthcare in Saskatchewan has never been in this bad of shape,” stated Meara Conway, the NDP Health Shadow Minister. “We need immediate action to bolster prevention and relieve the pressure on our hospitals.” Conway is urgently calling on Scott Moe and the Saskatchewan Party to launch a proactive public awareness campaign regarding the flu shot, emphasizing that this is a critical responsibility of the provincial government, especially during the holiday season when cases are surging.
As of December 13, there were 127 people hospitalized due to the flu, with 13 in intensive care. The situation has prompted cancellations of several local events, including Junior A hockey games, as community members fall ill. School absenteeism has also risen sharply, reaching 17.8% for the week ending December 13, up from 15% the previous week.
The NDP highlights that Saskatchewan is the only province currently reporting widespread flu activity, noting with alarm the recent deaths of three children from flu complications in Ontario. “This can be a matter of life and death—influenza is no joke,” Conway warned. “The government must stop being silent and take immediate action to protect our communities.”
Further complicating the crisis, multiple long-term care homes across the province are reporting outbreaks of Influenza A. Facilities such as the Herb Bassett Home in Prince Albert and the Red Deer Nursing Home in Porcupine Plain are among those affected. The situation is dire, with additional outbreaks reported at Chateau Providence in St. Brieux and River Heights Lodge in North Battleford.
In light of these alarming statistics, the NDP continues to call for an emergency plan to alleviate the chaos in Saskatchewan’s hospitals, where emergency wait times have reportedly reached as long as 41 hours. The provincial government has responded by stating that some of these numbers have been misconstrued, but the urgency of the situation cannot be overstated.
As the flu outbreak intensifies, residents are urged to take preventative measures, including getting vaccinated, to protect themselves and their loved ones. The situation remains fluid, and the need for immediate government action is more critical than ever.
