UPDATE: A shocking fraud scheme has been uncovered at the Esquimalt Ribfest, leaving several children’s charities deprived of thousands of dollars. Victoria Police confirmed that counterfeit tokens, created using a 3D printer, were used during the event held from September 5 to 7, 2023, in the 1100 block of Lyall Street.

Authorities report that the counterfeit tokens, which were valued at $8 each and used for purchasing beer, wine, and coolers, were likely produced in large quantities. This incident has raised alarms about the vulnerability of festivals relying on plastic tokens for transactions.

“Every festival that uses these plastic tokens, it’s a shot across the bow,” said Tom Woods, chair of the Esquimalt Ribfest Committee. He emphasized the ease with which someone could exploit such systems: “You can show up in the morning with a digital printer, buy one token and go home and create 50 of them.”

The estimated loss from this incident is around $2,000, prompting local businesses and community members to step forward and raise funds to cover the shortfall. This response underscores the vital role that Ribfest plays in supporting community initiatives.

“This is a disappointing incident, particularly given the important role Ribfest plays in our community,” stated Insp. Conor King of the VicPD Esquimalt Division. He highlighted the broader implications of using 3D printing technology for counterfeit currency, even in localized events.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed suspicious activities during the event, especially those who saw individuals exchanging unusually large numbers of tokens, to come forward. Information can be reported to the E-Comm non-emergency line at 250-995-7654 ext. 1, referencing file number 25-35469. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

As this story develops, the community remains on alert, emphasizing the need for stronger security measures at events to prevent future scams. The swift response from local businesses and authorities highlights the resilience of the community in overcoming this unfortunate incident.
