UPDATE: As a severe winter storm continues to blanket the Waterloo Region, local health officials are issuing urgent warnings about the dangers of shoveling snow. With forecasts predicting snow through Friday and into the weekend, residents are advised to take precautions to protect their health.

Dr. Al Qahwash, director of the Regional Cardiac Program at the Waterloo Regional Health Network, emphasizes the critical risks associated with snow shoveling, especially for those with underlying health issues. “Shoveling snow can be like running a 10-K marathon without any training,” Dr. Qahwash stated. “If you’re not careful, you could end up in the emergency room.”

The doctor reported a troubling 20 percent increase in emergency department visits during winter months due to snow shoveling incidents. Cold temperatures cause blood vessels to constrict, leading to increased heart rates and blood pressure, which can put undue strain on the heart.

“A lot of us just go out there and grab a shovel without even thinking,” Dr. Qahwash added. “We need to be aware of the risks and listen to our bodies.”

In light of these warnings, Dr. Qahwash urges residents to take several precautions. He recommends stretching before beginning the task and using appropriate equipment. “Choose a small, light shovel to avoid heavy lifting and remember to pace yourself,” he advised. “Rushing increases cardiac strain, and we want to avoid that.”

Residents are also advised to watch for warning signs such as chest tightness, shortness of breath, or dizziness. If any of these symptoms occur, it is essential to stop immediately and seek medical help.

As schools remain open and bus services experience cancellations due to the snowy conditions, the focus is on safety. Authorities are urging the community to take these health warnings seriously to prevent unnecessary hospital visits.

Stay tuned for updates as this winter storm progresses and more safety information becomes available. Prioritize your health while managing snow removal this weekend.
