Urgent: Impaired Driver Hits Police Cruiser During Arrest Attempt
UPDATE: A 31-year-old man faces multiple charges after an alarming incident where he reversed into a police cruiser while attempting to evade arrest. The Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) reported the incident occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Thursday near the intersection of Ottawa Street North and Weber Street East.
Officers responded to a call regarding a suspicious vehicle and discovered the man slumped over in the driver’s seat of a running car, surrounded by open alcohol containers. Upon police arrival, he attempted to flee, reversing into a cruiser and driving over a curb before being apprehended. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the chaotic scene.
The man is charged with impaired driving, dangerous operation of a vehicle, assault with a weapon, and assaulting a peace officer with intent to resist arrest. Additionally, he faces several charges under the Highway Traffic Act and the Liquor Licence and Control Act.
This incident underscores the dangers posed by impaired driving and the challenges law enforcement faces in keeping communities safe. The individual is currently in custody, awaiting a bail hearing.
