Urgent Investigation Launched After Saint John Arrest Injury
BREAKING: New reports confirm that the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is urgently investigating a Saint John police officer following a disturbing incident where a man suffered severe injuries during an arrest last summer. This investigation comes after the police force’s internal review prompted SiRT’s involvement due to the actions of one arresting officer.
On July 5, 2023, at approximately 2:17 a.m., police responded to a collision on the Harbour Bridge. Officers pursued an adult male driver who had allegedly fled the scene and was driving erratically, nearly striking an officer outside of their vehicle. The chase ended when the suspect’s vehicle became disabled on Main Street North, where multiple officers engaged with him and took him into custody.
According to SiRT, preliminary findings indicate that the man sustained serious injuries, including damage to his eye and ribs. The Saint John Police Force confirmed that the individual was transported to a local hospital for treatment after the incident.
In a statement, Chief R.M. Bruce of the Saint John Police Force expressed confidence in SiRT’s ability to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, emphasizing the importance of maintaining public trust. “We are committed to ensuring accountability and transparency in this matter,” he stated.
As the investigation progresses, the police officer involved will remain on active duty pending the outcome of SiRT’s inquiry. The situation has raised serious questions regarding police conduct and accountability, sparking discussions within the community.
SiRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. This incident marks a critical moment for public safety and police-community relations in the region.
As details continue to emerge, residents are urged to stay informed about updates from SiRT and the Saint John Police Force. This developing story highlights the urgent need for transparency and accountability in law enforcement practices.
