Urgent: Last Chance to Join Free Press Summer Reading Challenge
UPDATE: Parents, time is running out to enroll your children in the Free Press Summer Reading Challenge! The deadline to sign up for this exciting opportunity is fast approaching, with the challenge designed for young readers ages 7-15 years. Kids can read curated books and submit their reviews, with the chance to be featured in upcoming publications.
The Free Press confirms that McNally Robinson Booksellers has selected four books for each of the three age groups: 7-9 years, 10-12 years, and 13-15 years. Once the books are read, children are encouraged to submit star-rated reviews, which may be showcased in the books pages later this month.
The first batch of reviews was released on July 26, and the next round is set to run on August 30. Parents can access the complete list of books, review guidelines, and registration details at wfp.to/kidsbookclub. Don’t miss this chance for your kids to engage in reading and get their voices heard!
In other news, Winnipeg author Pchajek is making waves at this year’s WorldCon in Seattle, WA. He will be discussing and signing copies of his debut novel, set in Winnipeg in the year 2120. This novel follows a bounty hunter entangled with a new character in the city’s anti-establishment scene. Pchajek has hinted at a sequel, indicating further developments in his writing career.
Meanwhile, a significant controversy has emerged surrounding the 2025 Polari Prize. Several nominated authors have withdrawn their works in response to the inclusion of an anti-trans author. This has led to nearly half of the 24 authors in contention stepping back, including notable names such as Juno Dawson and Salena Godden. The Polari Prize has issued a public apology for the distress caused and promises a thorough review of its processes moving forward.
In literary accolades, California-born author and musician Levitin has been shortlisted for the prestigious 2025 Royal Society Trivedi Science Book Prize. The winner will be announced on October 1.
