UPDATE: A rapidly spreading wildfire in White Rock, B.C. has led to an urgent shelter-in-place order for five residents in three homes as firefighters battle the blaze. The fire, which ignited just after 10 a.m. on October 15, 2023, was fueled by dry brush in the 13800 block of Marine Drive, prompting immediate action from local officials.

Authorities confirmed that the fire expanded to approximately 100 feet wide at its peak. White Rock Fire Chief Brad Davie stated that local crews are working diligently to prevent the fire from spreading to the residential properties. The situation has escalated to the point where assistance from the B.C. Wildfire Service was requested, as the flames are burning in steep and challenging terrain.

In a significant response effort, two helicopters have been deployed to the area, dropping water on the fire to help bring it under control. By early afternoon, Chief Davie reported that the fire was considered “held,” with firefighters focusing on extinguishing any remaining hot spots.

As crews continue their efforts, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Officials are exploring every possible source, especially given the proximity of active train tracks north of the affected area.

Residents were initially prepared for evacuation, but thankfully, that action was deemed unnecessary. The community, made up of just under 22,000 residents, remains on high alert as firefighters monitor the situation closely.

This developing story is being closely watched, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Stay tuned for the latest developments on this urgent wildfire situation in White Rock.
