Urgent: Major Construction on Nanaimo’s Third Street Begins Now
UPDATE: Starting the week of November 10, 2025, the City of Nanaimo kicks off a significant year-long construction project along Third Street, resulting in expected traffic delays and road closures. Drivers are urged to seek alternate routes immediately as major infrastructure renewal disrupts the area.
The construction will span between Howard Avenue and Pine Street, involving extensive upgrades to critical underground infrastructure. This includes over 500 metres of water main piping, 260 metres of storm water piping, and 80 metres of high-density sanitary sewer replacement. New crosswalks with flashers, raised bike lanes, and protected crossings will also be added to enhance safety.
Residents and commuters should be prepared for significant disruptions. The city emphasizes its commitment to minimizing inconveniences and maintaining clear communication with the public throughout the project. A detailed map featuring the planned upgrades is available on the city’s website.
“The coordinated infrastructure renewals will not only save costs but will also reduce overall disruption to our community,” stated Annalisa Fipke, an engineer with the city’s engineering department. She added, “This project reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainable and inclusive design.”
While no specific completion date is set, the city anticipates the construction will conclude in fall 2026. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and adapt their travel plans accordingly.
This construction is part of Nanaimo’s broader initiative to modernize its infrastructure, ensuring safer and more accessible spaces for all users. The enhancements are expected to significantly improve the quality of life in the city, fostering a healthier, more connected community.
