Urgent: Maternity Services at Peace Arch Hospital Diverted Dec. 22-25
UPDATE: Expecting parents in White Rock face urgent challenges as Peace Arch Hospital announces a maternity diversion from December 22, 2023, at 8 a.m. to December 25, 2023, at 8 a.m.. This critical decision by Fraser Health affects all maternity services during this period, leaving many families scrambling for alternatives.
The diversion is implemented due to a shortage of obstetrician-gynecologists, a situation that has impacted not only Peace Arch Hospital but also Ridge Meadows Hospital. Fraser Health officials stated, “As a last resort, when physicians are unavailable to fill the gaps in the obstetrics/gynecology schedule, we implement a maternity diversion to support safe, uninterrupted care for our patients.”
This urgent update comes as Fraser Health collaborates with healthcare providers in the Lower Mainland to address staffing shortages. The health authority has set up a dedicated website where expecting parents can check for real-time updates and find guidance on alternative maternity options.
Families are advised to be aware that during the diversion, those in labor may be redirected to other maternity facilities for delivery. “We know this update may cause concern as you prepare for your baby’s arrival. We are truly sorry for any added stress this may bring,” Fraser Health’s website states. The emphasis is clear: the safety of both parent and baby is paramount.
Earlier in the month, Ridge Meadows Hospital faced a similar disruption from December 18 at 8 a.m. until December 22 at 8 a.m. As the holiday season approaches, healthcare officials are urging families to stay informed about the situation, as diversions may continue on select dates.
In the event of an emergency, Fraser Health strongly advises patients to call 9-1-1. Expecting parents are encouraged to plan ahead and seek alternative arrangements as they prepare for the arrival of their newborns.
This developing story highlights the ongoing challenges within healthcare staffing in the region, and Fraser Health is working diligently to ensure that safe, quality care remains a priority. Further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
