Urgent Meeting on Lundy’s Lane’s Future Draws 50 Attendees
UPDATE: A community engagement session on the future of Lundy’s Lane in Niagara Falls drew intense participation, with approximately 50 attendees voicing their concerns and ideas. The meeting, held at MacBain Community Centre on Wednesday, focused on the ongoing transformation of this key commercial district.
Coun. Mona Patel spearheaded the meeting, emphasizing the critical need for local input as redevelopment proposals flood in. “We need to shape the collective path forward,” Patel stated, addressing the shift from a vibrant tourist hub to a more residential-focused area.
Participants discussed pressing socioeconomic issues, including the impact of converting motels into residential units. Many voiced a desire for mixed-use development, combining businesses on the ground floor with residential units above. As Patel noted, “Nobody was opposed to affordable housing, but they all want to do it in a correct manner.”
The session also highlighted broader community challenges. Attendees raised concerns about social services, policing, and homelessness, issues that had previously gone unnoticed. “There are lots of issues that were not known to us that were brought to light,” Patel remarked.
The complexity of dealing with government officials regarding Lundy’s Lane was also a hot topic. Patel explained that the regional road status often leaves business owners confused about jurisdiction, complicating their ability to voice concerns. “It’s kind of confusing for some business owners,” she said.
The meeting proved a valuable networking opportunity, with several local business owners meeting for the first time. “Now they will be talking among themselves and supporting and helping each other,” Patel added.
City staff will compile the insights gathered and present a report to the council, potentially paving the way for a follow-up meeting if demanded by the community.
This engagement underscores the urgent need for collaborative approaches to address the evolving landscape of Lundy’s Lane, a vital commercial artery in the city. As the area continues to change, the active involvement of residents and business stakeholders will be crucial in shaping its future.
