Urgent: Mezuzahs Torn from Doors in North York Housing Complex
BREAKING: Mezuzahs, sacred Jewish prayer scrolls, have been violently torn from the doorways of senior units at the West Don Apartments in North York, authorities confirm. This alarming incident was reported to Toronto police on Sunday, prompting immediate investigations by the 32 Division and the Hate Crime Unit.
City councillor James Pasternak stated that all mezuzahs were removed from the doors at 6250 Bathurst St., a supportive housing location managed by the city. “This is an act of hate directed at Jewish residents — seniors who deserve safety, stability, and dignity in their own homes,” he expressed in a post on X.
Toronto police received “multiple reports” regarding this incident, though it remains unclear if the mezuzahs were taken on the same day or over several days. The disturbing act has drawn widespread condemnation, highlighting the ongoing challenges of antisemitism faced by communities.
Mayor Olivia Chow also reacted strongly to the vandalism, labeling it “an outrageous and vile act of antisemitism.” She announced plans to reach out to leaders at the Toronto Seniors Housing Corporation, which oversees the West Don Apartments, to understand how such an incident could occur in a space meant to provide security for vulnerable seniors.
Pasternak confirmed he spoke with the local rabbi following the incident, underlining the emotional toll this act has taken on the community. Residents are understandably shaken, feeling their homes are no longer safe spaces.
This incident comes at a time when incidents of hate crimes are being closely monitored across Canada. The actions against the mezuzahs serve as a grave reminder of the persistent issue of antisemitism and the urgent need for protective measures for minority groups.
Police are actively investigating and encourage anyone with information to come forward. This story is developing, and updates will follow as more details emerge.
Residents and community leaders are calling for unity and support for the affected seniors, emphasizing the need to stand against hate in all its forms. As investigations continue, local authorities are urging vigilance and solidarity within the community.
Stay tuned for more updates on this troubling situation as it unfolds.
