UPDATE: Montreal commuters, prepare for major disruptions! A strike by maintenance employees of the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is set to begin on September 22, potentially complicating your daily travel until October 5 unless an agreement is reached.

Officials confirm that the Tribunal administratif du travail has mandated only limited “essential services” during the strike, meaning significant reductions in both metro and bus operations. This is a developing situation that could severely affect your commuting plans.

On strike days—specifically Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays—metros will run only during three limited time slots: 6:30 to 9:30 a.m., 2:45 to 5:45 p.m., and again from 11:00 p.m. until just after 1:00 a.m.. The impact on your commute is undeniable; expect crowded trains and longer wait times during these hours.

Bus services will follow a similar restricted schedule on these days, with service only available until 1:15 a.m., resuming from 6:15 to 9:15 a.m., then again from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., and late-night service from 11:15 p.m. until night’s end. During the gaps, no new buses will depart, but existing routes will be completed.

For those who rely on public transit during the day, this strike means planning ahead is crucial. Midday and evening trips on these strike days will be particularly challenging. Commuters should consider alternative travel arrangements or adjust their schedules to avoid delays.

Although service remains normal on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the anticipated impact during the weekdays is significant. Authorities emphasize the importance of checking real-time schedules online before setting out, as timing may vary by line.

As negotiations continue, the situation remains fluid. Commuters are urged to stay informed and flexible, as changes could arise leading up to the strike.
