BREAKING: Alberta Health Services (AHS) has confirmed an alarming outbreak of gastrointestinal illness linked to the Saskatoon Farm restaurant, resulting in 29 cases of the serious parasitic infection Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica). The outbreak has now been connected to 49 probable cases of E. coli among diners who visited the establishment between July 1 and 18.

As of August 1, one individual remains hospitalized due to complications from the outbreak, while two others have been released. Health Canada warns that E. histolytica is a significant global health threat, infecting an estimated 500 million people annually and leading to severe conditions such as liver abscess and colitis in 50 million. Tragically, it results in the deaths of an estimated 40,000-100,000 individuals each year.

The Saskatoon Farm restaurant, located east of Okotoks, is currently closed following an inspection on July 29, which revealed two violations. Among the findings were the presence of pests and a “nuisance” condition that posed risks to public health. A live mouse was observed in the bakery area during the inspection.

AHS officials have not disclosed further details about the specific “nuisance” identified at the restaurant. The continued health risks have raised significant concerns among the local community and health officials.

Residents who dined at Saskatoon Farm during the specified dates are urged to monitor their health closely and seek medical attention if symptoms arise. The community is on high alert as officials work to contain the outbreak and ensure public safety.

As investigations continue, AHS is expected to provide further updates on the situation. For those affected, the emotional and physical impact is profound, highlighting the urgent need for vigilance around food safety standards.

Stay tuned for more developments as authorities work diligently to address this serious health crisis.
