Urgent Outcry in Ottawa After Hateful Graffiti Found at School

URGENT UPDATE: Parents and advocacy groups are demanding immediate action from the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) following the discovery of disturbing anti-Palestinian graffiti at Brookfield High School last week. The graffiti, which included a drawing of a pig with the word “Allah” and a swastika, has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting fear and outrage among students and parents alike.

One parent of a Palestinian student expressed her disgust, stating, “It felt extremely infuriating and disgusting to see so much hate in our school system.” She learned about the graffiti via social media before receiving any communication from the school, leaving her son afraid to use school washrooms.

In a letter sent to parents, the principal labeled the images as “Islamophobic and antisemitic,” but some, like James Kafieh, vice-president of the Palestinian Canadian Congress, criticized the school’s response as insufficient. “Their approach is simply to erase and pretend like it never happened,” Kafieh said, urging the OCDSB to confront the underlying anti-Palestinian racism.

The national advocacy organization is calling for “meaningful and substantial training” for staff to better identify and address such racism within the school. The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) expressed deep concern over the incident, with spokesperson Steven Zhou noting the alarming rise in anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian occurrences across Canada. “It’s always quite shocking and quite disconcerting,” Zhou said, highlighting the growing urgency for action from educational authorities.

The Jewish Federation of Ottawa also condemned the graffiti, emphasizing solidarity with all marginalized groups. Their statement read, “Hate directed at any group impacts us all,” reinforcing the need for a united front against discrimination.

As investigations continue, parents are urging the OCDSB to foster transparency and provide updates on the situation. Kafieh insists that acknowledgment of the issue is crucial, stating, “This is clearly targeting Palestinian Canadians, although we all have a right to be offended by this.”
